Preventing Hospital-Acquired Infections and Combating Antibiotic Resistance Through Effective Infection Control Practices
Antibiotics are not always necessary after every surgery. Their use depends on several factors, including the type of surgery, the patient's overall health and the risk of infection. Good infection control reduces the need for antibiotics by preventing infections in the first place. This helps in combating antibiotic resistance, a growing global concern.
Annual World Patient Safety Day, 14th September, aims to raise awareness about patient safety issues and global efforts to improve safety in healthcare systems. Patient safety is a crucial consideration in the use of antibiotics, especially in the context of surgery and healthcare in general.
Good hygiene and infection control practices in hospitals, such as proper handwashing, regular cleaning and disinfection of high touch surfaces (door knobs, bed rails, light switches), medical equipment, and patient care areas with high level disinfectants helps reduce hospital acquired infections (HAIs). Minimizing the risk of HAIs contributes to better patient outcomes and overall safety.
